About our school community...
Lake County's Rondout School District # 72 encompasses a 4.7 square mile
area in Eastern Libertyville township. It is bounded by Route 60 to the south,
St. Mary's Road to the west, the Milwaukee Road rail road tracks to the north,
and the township line to the east. Our district has one K-8 school, appropriately
named Rondout School. The school might have been named differently, for at one
time this agricultural area of Lake County was called Sulfur Glen. The name
was derived from the high content of sulfur in the water. Back in the late 1800's,
a business from Rondout, New York thought about relocating to Sulfur Glen, so
the town's name was changed. The business never moved, but the name remained;
so did the high sulfur content in the water.

The first school, built on Old School Road, provided an educational setting for the children of these early farmers...
As the area became increasingly industrial, and the railroad lines expanded, the population grew. In late summer of 1917, a new two room, red brick school building on Bradley Road opened.

Since 1917 there have been three additions to this building; and yes, the original two classrooms are still being used. Because much of our school district is either industrial or within five acre minimum residential zoning, the population density is very small.
Rondout School today ...
Currently ninety-seven families send their children to Rondout School. Our one hundred and forty-four students come from communities in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Libertyville, Green Oaks, Mettawa and the historic unincorporated area of Rondout. We are an ethnically, as well as a socioeconomically, diverse population.

Rondout School today ...
Our school has always been small but our growth in programs and services resulted in the recent expansion of our facilities in 1999. Our students, teachers, and parents are proud about our past accomplishments and excited about our potential for improvement as we eagerly welcome new challenges in the future.
We're Rondout School ... more than a little school ... more than a little proud!!
